5 Things to Consider While Hiring a Public Adjuster

ADDED December 15, 2011 1 COMMENTS

Disasters don’t knock before striking. You should make it a point to get your assets insured before any sort of disaster strikes your home.  Getting as much value as your damaged property restored back is the prime benefit of getting it insured.  Proper and thorough documentation of your insurance claim is the key to restore values successfully and without any glitches.

Advocate for Policy Holder

A public adjuster helps in getting this done. These professionals excel in helping you out with this complex process.  A public adjuster is an insurance claims adjuster, that is, an advocate meant for the policy holder for appraising and negotiating a first party insurance claim.  A Public adjuster needs to be licensed by the state insurance department and they are the only ones who can legally represent the rights of an insured person or property during a property insurance claim process.

5 Things to Consider

All public adjusters are not equal and no one knows your property losses better than you.  This is why it’s very important to select your public adjuster as well as to educate him/her about your property.  Now here are few points that you should keep in mind:

  1. It’s a necessity for your adjuster to be licensed.
  2. While calling the public adjusting company, you should make sure that you talk to the person who will be ultimately adjusting the losses.  Much of the things get lost in translation when you talk to the representatives through departments regarding your claim.
  3. Enquire about the adjuster’s experience and credentials and also for references to past claims he or she has handled.  The adjuster should possess a friendly and helpful personality.
  4. The company you are calling should not take on too much business and ultimately sacrifice quality and attention.  At the same time you should know the firm’s location.
  5. The public adjusters work on contingency fees ranging from 5% to 15% of the amount that the insurer pays you. Decide on a fee that you can actually afford happily.

Thinking of hiring a public adjustor? There are things you will need to be careful about to ensure a smooth insurance claim settlement.  The whole point of hiring a public adjustor is to stay away from the trouble of getting involved.  For a public adjuster in your area, please visit National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters (NAPIA)

Public adjusters are called by different names like Loss Assessors, Insurance Specialists, Claims Adjusters. It is very important to check the reputation of adjusters before hiring them.

Here are a few qualities that a public adjuster must possess:

    1. They should have a prior experience of working with an insurance company.
    2. They should have received a professional permit through state’s license of insurance.
    3. They must have excellent track record.
