Cerritos a city with serious commitment to the arts
Situated in southeast Los Angeles County, Cerritos has established itself as a city with a serious commitment to the arts. Home to a multi-facility performing arts center, the Cerritos Sculpture Garden and a spectacular library, this city of 60,000 serves not only its own citizens but also attracts visitors from near and far to its cultural venues.
Cerritos was incorporated as Dairy Valley in 1956 recognizing the more than 400 dairies, 100,000 cows and 106,300 chickens found within its limits. At the time, cows outnumbered the city’s residents by 29 to 1 and chickens outnumbered the residents by more than 30 to 1. After formally changing its name to Cerritos in 1967, Cerritos shed its agricultural roots and image by building the nation’s first solar-heated city hall complex and constructing the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. The Cerritos Fine Arts and Historical Commission has an “Art in Public Place” program which commissions artists to create sculptures and fountains to be displayed in public places and on commercial property.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department runs the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station and Community Safety Center. The city owns a fleet of propane-powered buses with internet access on board that are known as Cerritos on Wheels or COW—a reference to the city’s origins as a dairy center. The Cerritos Millennium Library has been named a “Star” library by Library Journal and has an extensive young adult collection.
The majority of Cerritos schoolchildren live within the boundaries of the ABC Unified School District ; the rest attend the Bellflower Unified School District. The city’s Whitney High School (grades 7 – 12) is currently ranked as the top high school in California and number 3 in the U.S. according to U.S. News & World Report
